Could it be caused by a strong pulsing signal outside
of the audio BW but within the BW of the RF filter? 

If such a strong signal existed it might cause
de-sensing of the front end resulting in the periodic
fade-out or segmentation. 

A series of CW dots for example a few 10's of kHz away
from the qrss sub-band but within the BW of the RF
front end filter??
